Help Your Teen Find Career Direction Before the Tuition Bills Start
Parents feel the pressure long before the FAFSA form is even submitted:
“How is my teen supposed to choose a major when they don’t even know what they want?”
And you’re right to question it.
That old model — “go to college, you’ll figure it out eventually” — set a lot of people up for disappointment. Today, 70% of Americans are disengaged at work and longing for something better.
College is too big of an investment to leave the direction up to chance.
Yet thousands of students head off every year without direction…hoping clarity magically appears.
It rarely does.
The Reality No One Warns Parents About
I hear this all the time:
“My teen got into a great school…but they still have no idea what they want to study.”
On paper, everything looks perfect.
The real message your kid needs to understand is this: direction matters more than the acceptance letter.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth no one warns parents about:
✔️ Over 60% of students change their major and 30% don't make it to their sophomore year
✔️ Each switch can add an extra semester or more.
✔️ Every extra semester costs thousands in tuition and housing.
And emotionally?
Watching your teen feel lost in the one place they’re “supposed” to figure it out is painful.
They're not lazy or dumb, they're just not clear on what they want.
Career Clarity Before College Changes Everything
Imagine your teen stepping onto campus already knowing:
• What environments they thrive in
• What strengths they naturally bring
• What fields actually match who they are
Suddenly, college stops feeling overwhelming and starts feeling intentional.
Students with career clarity before stepping foot on campus:
✔️ Choose majors that fit
✔️ Stay motivated
✔️ Make better internship decisions
✔️ Graduate sooner
✔️ Feel more confident and grounded
Career clarity doesn’t mean having every detail mapped out.
It simply means knowing enough about themselves to make choices that make sense.
How to Help Your Teen Figure Out What Fits
If your teen hasn’t found their direction yet, they’re not behind, they’re normal.
But clarity doesn’t magically appear during orientation week.
Start with reflection (the foundation of every strong career plan):
1. What activities make them lose track of time?
Interests reveal natural drive.
2. What subjects or hobbies actually excite them?
Excitement → sustainable motivation.
3. Do they thrive with people, ideas, data, or hands-on work?
This alone eliminates dozens of mismatched paths.
4. What environments help them do their best work?
Quiet? Fast-paced? Collaborative? Independent?
These questions help teens understand themselves before choosing a direction and that’s the key.
College shouldn’t be, “just a discovery phase.”
It should be the execution phase.
For Parents of High School Students
High school is the perfect time to start exploring strengths, interests, and natural patterns.
Not to pressure them.
To prepare them.
The earlier they understand what fits them, the less stress they’ll carry into their college decision and the fewer costly reroutes they’ll face later.
For Parents of College Students
If your teen is already in college and feeling lost, it’s not too late.
Most students choose a major for reasons that have nothing to do with clarity:
• They liked one class
• A friend is in that major
• It “sounds practical”
• They panicked and picked something
They don’t need to start over.
They need to step back, reassess, and realign before more time and money slip away.
The best time to gain career clarity was before college.
The second-best time is right now.
The Bottom Line
College is a powerful investment…but only when it’s backed by purpose.
When your teen understands what they want and what direction they’re heading, college becomes a launchpad instead of a guessing game.
That’s why I’ll always stand by the phrase:
Career First. College Second.
It’s the simplest way to reduce stress, protect your investment, and set your teen up for a future that actually fits.
