Myths and Facts About Picking a Career
Myth: “If I choose a major or a career, I’ll be stuck with it forever.”
Fact: Most majors prepare you for a variety of careers. When you combine what you learn in your major with other skills you gain from full-time work, internships, and other activities, you’ll have the ability to move in a variety of directions.
Myth: “Job market demand should be the most important aspect of choosing a program of study.”
Fact: It is important to look at the potential for employment; however, what is in demand when you begin school may not be in demand when you graduate. Selecting a career area that truly interests you and making adjustments regarding where that career takes you will serve you best.
Myth: “I just need a little more information before I can make a decision.”
Fact: Although it’s important to make a well-informed decision, people can get paralyzed because they think they don’t know enough or just make a random decision so they don’t have to think about it anymore. Collect information about your career ideas and validate your choices through research and interviews with professionals. But realize that even after you make a decision, you will still be able to make adjustments to your career plan as you go.
